Hyderabad witnessed a historic moment in Indian chess as 10-year-old twins Anay
and Amaya Agarwal, students of Indus International School, created history by
becoming the youngest twins ever to achieve master titles in the same year
and within the shortest time span ever recorded of just 2.5 years.
Anay Agarwal earned the Candidate Master (CM) title, while his twin sister Amaya
secured the Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) title. Amaya achieved her title
earlier this year, inspiring Anay to push himself further. He subsequently earned his
CM title at the European Club Championship in October, competing against
strong international opposition and highlighting India’s growing presence on the
global chess stage.
Beyond the chessboard, the Hyderabad-born twins exemplify all-round excellence.
At Indus International School, they are top academic performers and, for the
third consecutive year, have been awarded medals on the Advanced Student
Honour Roll for studying two years ahead of grade level in Kumon
Mathematics. Both children are accomplished pianists, with Amaya also
demonstrating a notable talent for singing. In addition, they actively participate in
athletics and badminton.
At home, at school, and in competition, the twins share a spirited sibling rivalry—
each constantly motivating the other to improve. This healthy competition has
played a key role in shaping their discipline, resilience, and drive for excellence.
Their success is the result of a strong support system. The family acknowledges
that none of these achievements would have been possible without the
unwavering encouragement and guidance of their teachers at Indus
International School and their dedicated chess coach from Ekagra Chess
Academy, who have played a pivotal role in nurturing both their academic and
sporting journeys.
Their journey highlights the values chess instils beyond victories: time
management, focus, mental strength, and perseverance. Balancing academics,
sports, music, and competitive chess at such a young age is no small feat, yet
Anay and Amaya continue to do so with remarkable composure and consistency.
As Hyderabad celebrates this landmark achievement, Anay and Amaya Agarwal
stand as inspiring symbols of dedication, teamwork, and youthful potential—two
siblings, two champions, and truly, two forces of nature.
