Hyderabad: For the first time in Telangana, the Ekagra Chess Academy is organising one of the largest Open Rapid Chess Tournaments with a massive prize pool of ₹22,22,222. The two-day event will be held on December 20 and 21 at the HITEX Exhibition Center in Hyderabad.
Speaking at a press conference held at Somajiguda Press Club, Ekagra International Chess Tournament Vice Chairman, senior journalist, and Nandi Award winner Sharif Mohammad said, “This is the first time such a big open rapid tournament is being hosted in Telangana. A total cash prize of ₹22,22,222 will be distributed among the winners.”

Tournament Director Girish Reddy shared, “Since the establishment of Ekagra Chess Academy in 2020, we have trained thousands of students. In the 2022 FIDE-rated tournament we conducted, more than 1,300 players participated. This time, we are organising the event on an even grander scale.”
Women Organising Secretary Soumya Janu added, “Students who perform exceptionally well in this tournament will be selected for the Ekagra Chess Scholarship Program. Chess significantly improves concentration, memory, and self-confidence.”
Organised jointly with Prime9 News Channel, the tournament is already drawing huge interest from players across the country. Organisers said this is a rare opportunity for chess players in Telangana to compete at an international standard event.
